Requirements for the workshop:
Audience:
This workshop is intended mainly for teachers and students from non CS/IT background and focuses mainly on scientific computing with Python. Hence, there have to be at least 60 participants attending the workshop and at least 50% of them have to be teachers/lecturers/professors.
Logistics:
- The workshop is designed to be completely hands on and hence we need a lab where the workshop can be held, and it should accommodate all the participants comfortably.
- The lab must provide computers in working condition to all the participants attending the workshop. The participants are allowed to get their own laptops provided they have all the packages installed.
- All the computers must have the following packages for Linux:
- ipython
- scite
- python-numpy
- python-scipy
- python-matplotlib
- mayavi2
- Computers with Windows should have Enthought Python Distribution(EPD) installed on them with student license.
- We shall assist you in installing all these packages by being there one day in advance. Also the participants will be given Live DVDs of our distribution which has all these packages installed and the participants can boot/install from it and use.
- Printed cheat sheets, we shall give the content of the cheat sheets that need to be printed in order to be distributed to the participants of the workshop.
- Appropriate projection facility which includes a good projector(two if required) and proper arrangement of the projector screen so that all the participants can view the screen without discomfort.
- We shall need a prior list of participants so that we can be assured that we are getting the intended audience. We shall provide a registration application for the participants to register if there is no such provision from your side.
- We need a point of contact whom we can contact and inquire about the arrangements on a regular basis. Also we shall display his/her email id on the registration site.
- We want these workshops to be publicized across the local lugs and other mailing lists so that all the interested participants can manage their schedules.
- Preferably we need a working LAN across the computers.
- If the lab is large, we shall need proper audio facilities (microphone and speakers) for the instructors.
- Since we are providing funding for the workshop we shall need all the details sent to us before hand so that we can dispatch the funding in time. We need the following details:
- Name of the person in whose name the DD has to be issued.
- An approximate amount for which the DD has to be issued.
- Address to which the DD has to be sent.
- We need a complete account of the expenditure along with all the bills which has to be sent to us within the week after the workshop along with a DD for the amount that is left.
Additional requirements:
Reasonable accommodation for 4-5 people at a hotel/guest house close to the venue. The accommodation should have hot water available and decent toilets facilities. If the accommodation cannot be arranged by the organizers, we shall do it for ourselves.
Deliverables:
- We shall deliver our 2 day workshop as per the schedule displayed above.
- Teachers attending the workshop from outstation shall be reimbursed for their accommodations and travel.
- We shall provide the funding for the workshop.
Note: The workshop schedule we present here is fully packed and we are extremely particular about it. We do not entertain latecomers for the simple reason that it causes a lot of inconvenience to the rest of the participants who were on time.
In addition to these we would like to highlight certain points:
1. Our goal is to help educational institutions improve the quality of
teaching by using FOSS tools. We would like to stress
that this is NOT about CS/IT departments only. In fact our workshops
will be of limited value to students and faculty from CS.
2. We prefer to run FDP programs for multiple institutions--so you
need to be able to provide for lodging and other facilities,
for faculty from outstation, who would be attending.
3. We need classrooms that have computers. Or labs that are conducive
for having lectures. We often find that in colleges,
labs are too small, cramped and have no real facility for conducting
classes, while class rooms have no provision for
having computers for all on the desks.
So please confirm the availability of suitable classroom and indicate
the number of seats therein.
4. In addition, you will have to send us a list of the faculty who will be attending with details of
Name
Department
Years of experience
Current tools they use for teaching/research
Intended use of FOSS tools
Alternatively, you can use the registration site provided by us and ask every participant to register at the site.
