How to reach to IIT Bombay and where to report?

  • How should I reach IITB?
    For general instructions to reach and stay in the campus, click here. Please head towards your hostel once you reach the campus. We shall send you the hostel details via email.
  • Where should I report when I come to IIT Bombay?

If you are coming on a weekend, please proceed to the allotted hostel. In case you coming on a weekday, report to FOSSEE office. The address is :

Reporting and documents

  • What documents do I need to bring for the Fellowship?
    • A valid photo ID card/ College ID and a few passport size photographs of  yourself.
    • You need to bring a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from your HoD that you don’t have any course-work requirements in your parent institution during the period of fellowship (optional).
  • Can I report after May 20th for the fellowship?
    Selected candidates may report by June 6th, which is the latest date. But this delay in joining should be due to exceptional reasons such as exams. This should be communicated to us well in advance. Moreover, joining late will require you to continue working remotely after you leave IIT Bombay. Please note that the certificate and honorarium will be released only after successful completion of the fellowship.

Accomodation and food

  • Will I get on-campus accommodation at IIT Bombay?
    Yes. The fellows will be provided with on-campus hostel accommodation   on twin sharing basis at IIT Bombay during the fellowship. The accommodation will be available from May 20th to July 6th only and cannot be extended beyond this date for any reason. Therefore, you are advised to book your tickets accordingly. A caution deposit of INR 2000 (which is refundable) is there for the hostel. The hostel fees and mess charges have to be borne by you. Approximately this charges will be INR 4500/-.
  • Can I avail mess facilities during the fellowship?
    Yes. You may have your meals (on payment basis) in the mess of your hostel,
    where you will be accommodated. Apart from the mess facilities, there are canteens in IIT Bombay, which anyone can access. The mess and the canteen charges have to be borne by you.

Working hours/ Payment / Other requirements for Fellowship

  • Will I get any stipend for fellowship?
    Yes. The fellows will be provided with a stipend as given on https://fossee.in/list-of-fellowship-tasks/#general_details. The stipend will be sufficient to cover the expenses of food and lodging. However, the amount of the fellowship will depend upon the performance.
  • What are the expected working hours?
    Usual working hours of the institute are from 9:15 AM to 6.45 PM (Monday through Saturday). However most technical people work beyond these hours. The interns need to sign in an attendance register daily.  
  • On what project will I get to work on?
    The project assigned during the fellowship will be an advanced level of the respective screening tasks. For this, the fellows will be required to learn more technical tools. For detailed description of the projects, please visit https://fossee.in/list-of-fellowship-tasks.
  • Do I need to submit a report at the end of fellowship?
    Yes. The fellows are required to submit a detailed report. This report is mandatory for the processing of certificate and stipend.
  • Do I need a laptop?
    Yes. You cannot join the Fellowship if you fail to bring your laptop. Moreover, you might be asked by your mentor to install some software, if any, before coming to IIT Bombay.
  • Which operating system should be used during the fellowship?
    We recommend you to use the Linux OS preferably Ubuntu OS. It would be better if you have a dual boot your system before coming to the fellowship program.
  • When can I expect to receive the stipend and certificate?
    Issuing of stipend and certificate will take a couple of months after the date of successful completion of the fellowship. Therefore, you are advised to have INR 10k-15k in your hand to manage your living and food expenses during your stay at IIT Bombay.
  • What will be the weather conditions in Mumbai during the Fellowship?
    During May and June, the climate becomes hot and humid in the afternoons. The air temperature will be around 35 degrees C (90% relative humidity) in the daytime and around 25-30 degrees C at night.
    The monsoon rains hit Mumbai in the month of June. The rains are quite heavy and last till the end of August. The climate becomes a bit damp! The air temperature will be around 30 degrees C (80% relative humidity) in the daytime and around 20 degrees C at night. An umbrella or a raincoat is definitely recommended if visiting during the monsoon period.
  • Can we do the fellowship as Work From home basis?
    The fellowship cannot be done on “Work from home” basis. As it will require mentoring and monitoring of the work. It is mandatory for you to come to IIT Bombay for the fellowship.
  • Can I get a letter of confirmation for getting selected under FOSSEE Fellowship to show to the college?
    Please take a print out of the email sent by us regarding your selection for the fellowship, for this purpose.
  • What letter should I show at the security check for entering the campus?
    You can show the mail sent to you by us regarding your selection for the FOSSEE Summer Fellowship.
  • How do I travel inside the campus?
    It is good to walk inside the campus. You can get rickshaws.
  • What will happen if I fail to finish the task assigned in the specific time?
    All the fellows have to finish the task assigned in the specific period of time. If they fail to do so, then he/she will not be eligible for the certificate and stipend for the fellowship.
  • Will I get any travelling allowance from FOSSEE?
    No. The travel expenses should be borne by the fellows.
  • Will I get any help in booking the cabs for the travel?
    No. Please install Ola or Uber applications in your mobile which will help you book the cab for your travel, on your own.
  • Can I go outside the campus during my stay at IIT Bombay?
    Yes. You can go outside the campus during your stay at IIT Bombay only after the working hours mentioned above.  FOSSEE will not be responsible about anything which happens outside the campus.

  • Whom should I call for directions to reach IIT Bombay?
    You can call 022-2576-4111 for assistance from Monday to Friday (10 am to 6 pm) only. You can use google maps GPS enter the location and navigate to the destination you have to reach.
  • How do I travel in Mumbai?
    Mumbai is very well connected by local trains and buses. There is metro train available from Ghatkopar to Andheri station which connects the central and the western line of Mumbai. You can easily get rickshaw or taxi anywhere is Mumbai
  • Will I be eligible to use the library at IIT bombay?
    You can definitely use the library to read any books but you will not be eligible to issue any books. You can sit and read the book inside the library.
  • Will I be able to avail the hospital facility during my stay at IIT Bombay?
    No. The IIT Bombay hospital facility is strictly for the staff and faculty as per IIT Bombay norms. You can definitely go to the nearby hospitals.
  • Can I avail the gymkhana facility during my stay at IIT Bombay?
    You can only go to the main gymkhana ground for a walk. You can not use any sports facility like the volleyball, swimming, badminton, table tennis etc.
