  • IITB-FOSSEE Mapathon (Edition III):

    Mapathon is an event where participants create thematic maps through a collaborative effort where participants come together to develop new tools/methods that improve the accuracy and usefulness of maps for a community. This event was co-organized by the FOSSEE project and IIT Tirupati Navavishkar I-Hub Foundation (IITTNiF). This event was open to all Indian citizens. The participants created maps from publicly available geospatial datasets using Free/ Libre Open Source Software (FLOSS), such as QGIS.

    The event was held from February -  June 2023. The registration opened on 1 February 2023. The formal inauguration took place on February 23, 2023, at the IIT Tirupati campus followed by a Q &A session for the participants to clear the doubts. The closing ceremony was on 10 June 2023. We received more than 5000 registrations. Around 1780 teams submitted out of which 535 of decent standard. 14 teams were awarded the Champions award, 74 winners and 257 notable submissions.   • DWSIM Flowsheeting Competition:

    The FOSSEE Project with the Department of Chemical Engineering, IIT Bombay, conducted the DWSIM Flowsheeting Competition from January to March 2023. The competition was open to all undergraduate and graduate students, as well as professionals, around the world. The objective was to design the most efficient process flowsheet for a given chemical process, using DWSIM. The competition challenged participants to demonstrate their understanding of the fundamental principles of chemical engineering and their ability to apply them to real-world problems.

    175 students across the world submitted the proposal out of which only 20 participants could complete and submit the flowsheet in the given time of 45 days. 5 participants were selected as the winners of the competition. The winners of the competition were selected based on the efficiency and effectiveness of their flowsheet design, as well as on the quality of their presentation and analysis.   • FOSSEE Summer Fellowship 2023:

    FOSSEE Summer Fellowship is a regular fellowship activity conducted by the FOSSEE project during the summer break. Through this Fellowship, we select students to work on different projects under FOSSEE and provide them with an opportunity to contribute to the open source community. The fellows can opt to work full-time (8 hours per day for a minimum of 6 weeks) or part-time (6 hours per day for a minimum of 8 weeks) based on their availability and academic commitments.

    The fellowship continued to be conducted remotely in 2023. Many students from different institutes across India participated remotely and contributed. At the end of the fellowship all students submitted a detailed report. These reports were published on the FOSSEE website and released under open source. The fellows were awarded with eCertificates. The link where his/her work is published and this can be used by the fellows for any future employment, internship or higher studies. Following are the rough statistics of the internship:

  • 2 Day workshop on eSim:

    Yashwantrao Chavan College of Engineering - YCCE invited the eSim team under the FOSSEE project to conduct a 2-Day Workshop on eSim as a part of a Faculty Development Programme. The focus of the workshop was on helping faculty members to shift to eSim.The Workshop included some demo sessions as well as hands-on sessions on eSim. All the features of eSim from circuit schematic creation to simulation in mixed mode were covered. 30 faculty members attended this workshop on 26 - 27 December 2022. 

  • Workshop on Open Source Technologies:

    The FOSSEE team in association with Shri. L R Tiwari college of Engineering organised a one day workshop on Open Source Technologies on 20 December 2022. This event aimed to create awareness of open source technologies among the faculty members under Mumbai University as Open Source Technologies lab is introduced in the curriculum of Mumbai University. This was attended by around 35 faculty members from various engineering colleges under Mumbai University. The faculty members spent a day with the FOSSEE team understanding the significance of Open Source technologies, getting hands on experience in two open source software, viz. Scilab and eSim and how they can contribute to Open Source technologies.

  • All India 2D animation Hackathon:

    FOSSEE conducted an online hackathon based on 2D animation using Synfig Studio. The participants had to create an original 2D animated short movie video of maximum of 3 mins duration using Synfig Studio. All the supporting graphics, audio, etc., were to be made using only open source software such as GIMP, Inkscape, etc. The narration in the video can be in any of the 22 scheduled Indian languages.

    The registration started on 20 Dec 2022 and closed on 13 February 2023. The theme for the hackathon was announced on 2 January 2023 and were:

    We had around 1000 teams which participated and out of this around 100 teams submitted the animations. 38 submissions were shortlisted. All the shortlisted submissions were awarded certificates. The details can be found in this link: https://hackathon.fossee.in/2D-animation/results

  • Mixed Signal SoC design Marathon using eSim & SKY130:
    The online Mixed-Signal SoC design Marathon aimed to provide the participants with an open platform and guide them to explore the trending area of mixed signal chip design. This marathon used eSim (an open-source mixed signal simulation engine) and SKY130 (an open-source PDK).  The participants were expected to design Mixed Signal Circuits using the eSim Software and use SKY130 PDK and NgVeri to simulate and analyze their circuits.
     
    More than 2,700 people registered for it. More than 300 designs that require quite a bit of work were submitted. From these, 114 circuits were selected as outstanding, excellent, very good and good. The results were announced on 4 Nov. 2022 in a closing function with Prof. Kamakoti Veezhinathan, Director IIT Madras, as the Chief Guest. Details are available through the results tab of https://hackathon.fossee.in/esim/. This is the third marathon in this subject area that the FOSSEE team organised under eSim.

    The FOSSEE Team provided a custom made version of eSim for this marathon. It created the website https://hackathon.fossee.in/esim/, and provided the entire logistic support for the conduct of this event. VSD conceptualised this activity, helped conduct workshops, cleared the doubts of the participants, etc. The required SKY130 IPs were created during the past one year under the supervision of VSD. Google provided financial support for this activity.

    There were four stages in this marathon: (1) The participants conducted a literature survey and proposed a circuit to be designed (2) Once approved, they designed the circuit using eSim and the SKY130 IPs (3) They created the required documentation (4) The FOSSEE and VSD teams validated the submissions, and announced the results. Students/faculty/professionals from more than 60 institutions, from all over the world, contributed circuits that are selected as Outstanding, Excellent, Very Good and Good, all ready for the tapeout.

  • Python Hackathon:

    The FOSSEE, the team is organising this online Python Hackathon. It aims to allow participants to flex their Python skills as well as creativity. In this Hackathon, the objective will be to build a 2D Python Game based on a Theme using Pygame. For more details, visit:

  • IITB-AICTE Mapathon:

    The IITB-AICTE Mapathon is a map-making competition for creating thematic maps. It is a collaborative event where participants come together to develop new tools/methods that improve the accuracy and usefulness of maps for a community. This event, organised jointly by IIT Bombay and AICTE invites all Indian nationals to develop maps from openly available geospatial datasets using Free Open Source Software (FOSS), for example, QGIS.   • CFD-OpenFOAM: Webinars:

    The OpenFOAM team of FOSSEE also conducted Webinars in the months of June and July, wherein, participants were made aware of the basic concepts of CFD & OpenFOAM. The webinars covered the capabilities of OpenFOAM and its applications plus scope of participation and contribution to the OpenFOAM Project of FOSSEE. This was a half day online event. These webinars were attended by around 1000 participants, which consisted of both faculty and students.
