Mapathon is a map making competition for creating thematic maps, using open source data and mapping software. It is a collaborative event where participants come together to develop new tools/methods that improve the accuracy and usefulness of maps for a community. This event was co-organized by FOSSEE, IIT Bombay along with All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and was open to all Indian citizens.
The event was held from February - June 2022. Announcement of winners was on 13 June 2022. We got more than 1794 team (4666 participants) registrations. RuDRA (Rural Data Research and Analysis) group of CTARA, IIT Bombay, provided advanced level GIS training, and hand holding in map making. It also evaluated the submissions. The GISE Hub at IIT Bombay helped in conceptualisation of this event, and provided financial support to pay honoraria to all winners. About 500 teams from about 125 institutions submitted their maps. About 237 submissions were shortlisted. Out of this 20 teams were adjudged as Champions and 81 were declared as winners. The rest were recognised as notable submissions.
